Prevention of Alzheimer's disease

24.09.2020

The risk of developing Alzheimer's disease increases with age. The probability is largely determined by genetic factors, however, according to experts, the role of modifiable factors is also significant. These include lifestyle, nutrition, and bad habits. Experts consider the presence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes to be important factors.

Recommendations for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease related to a healthy diet and exercise:

  • Minimize the consumption of saturated fats found in dairy products, meat, and certain types of oil (coconut and palm), as well as trans fats that enter our body from snacks, fried foods, and foods that contain "partially hydrogenated oil".
  • Replace meat and dairy products with plant-based foods – vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains. Let them become the main components of your daily diet.
  • The recommended daily intake of vitamin E is 15 mg, and its source should be such products as seeds, nuts, green-leafed vegetables (cabbage, spinach, parsley, dill, basil, dark green leaf lettuce) and whole grains, but not supplements.
  • Vitamin B12 can be taken in supplements. The daily allowance for adults is 2.4 micrograms. It is strongly recommended to regularly check the level of vitamin B12 in the blood through a standard test, since there are several factors that prevent the absorption of the vitamin in the human body, and one of these factors is age.
  • When choosing vitamin complexes, give preference to those that do not contain copper and iron. You should only consume supplements with iron if prescribed by a doctor.
  • The role of aluminum in the development of Alzheimer's disease is not yet fully understood, so minimize contact with aluminum dishes and the use of antacids, baking powder and other products containing aluminum.
  • Prolong the youthfulness of the mind with regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise.
