Flu shot during pregnancy

13.09.2019

Influenza is an infectious disease that, depending on the state of immunity and the strain, can occur in different ways, and in the most negative cases-cause severe complications. During pregnancy, the body's defenses are reduced, the mother's immunity weakens, and the body's ability to resist all kinds of infections decreases. Influenza in a pregnant woman occurs in a more severe form and this virus is dangerous precisely because of its complications (pneumonia, sinusitis, bronchitis, otitis media). Chronic diseases become more acute: diabetes mellitus, bronchial asthma, bronchitis, nephritis.

Know this! The most dangerous consequence of the flu in a pregnant woman is a miscarriage or premature birth, and it is also likely to be fatal in swine flu.

The flu in a pregnant woman can also affect the health of the fetus. Most of all, it is dangerous in the early stages of pregnancy, when the tissues and organs of the human embryo are laid and formed. Viral intoxication or exposure to medication can lead to pathology of the child's organs.

Unfortunately, to date, no other protection against influenza has been developed, except for vaccinations. Of course, vaccination has both its supporters and opponents. No one disputes that it is better not to get vaccinated if a woman stays at home, does not go shopping and other public places and has a limited circle of contacts. But if a woman leads an active lifestyle, still works, meets with other people, vaccination is necessary. The choice is left to the future mother, but, in the absence of contraindications, experts recommend doing it at the beginning of the second trimester, especially if the pregnancy occurs during the seasonal period of epidemics. Vaccination is preferred 1 month before the beginning of the increase in the infectious activity of the virus, most often in September-early October.

The advantages of vaccination can also be attributed to the fact that the antibodies formed in the mother from the virus will protect the baby after birth up to 6 months. Of course, if the strain of the virus changes during this period, people who are surrounded by the child will still have to be vaccinated until the child is six months old, but part of the protection will still work.
