With the help of vision, a person receives up to 90 percent of information about the world around them.

Therefore, any violation of visual function significantly reduces the quality of life.

The visual analyzer is one of the most complex systems of the human body, the state and quality of which depends on a variety of factors. These include nutrition, the nature of visual stress, bad habits and lifestyle in general. What can damage the eyes and how to maintain good vision until old age?

Computer

Sunglasses

For many people, sunglasses are just a fashion accessory. However, they are primarily designed to protect the eyes-both in summer and winter. Learn how to choose sunglasses.

Life in the modern world is impossible without a computer, but working even at the highest quality monitor is far from safe for vision.

One of the consequences of working at a computer for many hours is the so – called computer vision syndrome (CFS). It is characterized by blurred vision, fatigue when reading, burning and redness of the eyes.

Asthenopia is a widespread type of SCD . It usually develops in those who work a lot at the computer and have to read for a long time.

Asthenopia is accompanied by pain in the eyes, lacrimation, redness of the eyelids and eyeballs. The risk of its occurrence increases such visual disturbances as farsightedness, myopia and astigmatism.

Also, people who spend a lot of time at the computer develop dry eye syndrome. This is due to the fact that the person reading from the screen blinks less often, which means that it does not sufficiently moisturize the cornea. In addition, dry air conditioning, dust and exhaust gases in the atmosphere of large cities, as well as exposure to tobacco smoke, are also affected.

Dry eye syndrome also develops in thyroid pathology and other hormonal disorders. Its main symptoms: pain in the eyes, a feeling of "sand" under the eyelids, burning, itching, photophobia.

Influence of age

Visual impairment, rapid eye fatigue, and pain may also be the result of age-related changes. This is usually caused by presbyopia – a decrease in vision at close range. Such a violation can be corrected by selecting glasses or lenses.

Smoking and alcohol

Under the influence of toxic substances of tobacco smoke, damage to the optic nerve and retina of the eye occurs. In addition, the smoke itself irritates the mucous membrane of the eyes and eyelids, so the smoker's eyes often water and look inflamed.

Smokers are more likely to have a color perception disorder, which can affect a person's professional fitness. For example, such a person cannot work as a driver, since the driver must clearly distinguish between red, yellow and green colors.

In addition, smoking leads to poor vision and even complete loss of it. Optometrists even have a special term - "tobacco blindness".

Alcohol is a powerful neurotoxin that has a detrimental effect on the entire brain as a whole. And in particular - on the areas of the cerebral cortex responsible for visual perception. In ophthalmology, there is a concept of alcohol intoxication of the optic nerve.

How to save your vision?

1. Regularly visit ophthalmological offices in polyclinics and health centers equipped with modern diagnostic equipment. Many diseases, such as glaucoma, are better diagnosed as early as possible to preserve vision for a long time.

2. Properly arrange your workplace, organize lighting, choose comfortable furniture.

3. Do eye exercises. It is very effective not only as a preventive measure, but also in the early stages of visual impairment. In some cases, gymnastics for the eyes helps to achieve even better vision and prevents more serious eye damage.

4. If you are recommended to wear glasses, do not forget to use them. Contrary to popular belief, this does not lead to a deterioration of vision, but on the contrary, allows you to ease the load on the eye muscles, therefore, creates a more comfortable state for the eyes.

5. If you use contact lenses, pick them up in the doctor's office and follow the rules of care for them.

6. Eat foods that help strengthen the vessels of the retina: blueberries, currants, carrots. If you have myopia, include cod liver, cottage cheese, cheese, and herbs in your diet. And for the nutrition and protection of the retina, foods containing a large amount of antioxidants are important: beans, seafood, olive oil and spices. Do not overuse spicy and salty food.

The most important thing

Visual impairment can lead not only to working at the computer, but also to bad habits: smoking and alcohol consumption. To maintain good vision for a long time, do not forget to regularly visit an optometrist, do eye exercises and eat products that help strengthen the retinal vessels.
