How to survive the first session

13.04.2018

First session in University is a serious stress not only for the first-year student, but also for his parents. While the teenager has not yet forgotten the entrance exams, parents have already begun to worry about the grades in the diploma.

How can I help a young student survive the session and not get too excited?

Stop being nervous

The best way to help your child during the session is to stop being nervous yourself. Many students say that they feel the highest tension during the session in their own family.

It is not necessary to make excessive demands on the first session and constantly monitor how the teenager learns the material and how well the exams pass.

The five is not an end in itself

Parents of a first-year student will have to be patient and treat their son or daughter's studies calmly and positively. Explain to the teenager that exams are part of the learning process, and not the end of the world: neither for them, nor for you. After all, in the worst case scenario, the exam can be retaken.

The most important thing is to convey to the child that, although the result of the exam is important, it will not affect your relationshipin any way .

Talk to your child

After the exams, let the teenager speak out. Listento how the day went, what questions you got on the exam, how he answered and what the teacher said.

Don't be tempted to criticize your child for making mistakes and blame them for poor preparation. Otherwise, the next time the child will be limited to the duty response: "Everything is fine."

Reduce the load

During the session, remove some of the child's work from the house. When a student spends all day studying notes, you should not scold him for the mess in the room or the garbage that was not taken out in time.

However, washing cups and forks, taking a shower, and putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket are still his daily duties.

Load the refrigerator correctly

Make sure that there are healthy foods in the refrigerator that you can eat, and on the stove – food for a full meal.

Some parents believe that during the exam, you need high-calorie food – fatty meat and sweets, which supposedly " help in the work of the brain."

Remember, too high-calorie food does not improve the memorization of the material, but on the contrary-it causes a feeling of drowsiness and reduces performance.

A teenager's diet should be well-balanced and healthy, especially during the session.

How to feed a student?

So that the student does not experience hunger attacks during the exam, he needs a full breakfast, not a couple of sandwiches.

In the middle of the day, a meal rich in protein will help to cheer up: lean meat or fish with a vegetable side dish. Not a cup of coffee or a can of tonic.

Sneak a large bowl of fruit and some nuts into the student's room. Such snacks improve brain function much more effectively than chocolate.

Encourage your child to join meals together. This will allow him to change the situation and distract from books or the computer.

It is important to get enough sleep before the exam

Good sleep improves memory and concentration. To get a good night's sleep, a teenager needs eight to nine hours of full sleep.

First session – first cigarette

Many teenagers smoke their first cigarette when they cross the threshold of the university. Shouting, swearing, or being punished won't help.

But cramming for the night before the exam is a bad idea. Sleep will bring the student much more benefitthan panicked attempts to learn the material on the eve of the test.

If it is difficult for a teenager to fall asleep, try not to eat too much at night. A cup of warmed milk or herbal tea will help.

We still need to move

Encourage your child to be physically active. If he is going to at least take a walk, do not hint that he has yet to learn the tickets.

Fresh air and physical activity are a good way to relieve stress and triple the brain's "reset". After such a break, the material will be easier to digest.

Young athletes should be advised that the session is an occasion to review the training schedule, but not to abandon them altogether.

How to celebrate good luck?

A successful exam is a cause for celebration. Prepare a delicious dinner and congratulate the teenager with the whole family.

Small rewards for successfully passing exams from parents motivate the child to study. Just do not use the reward as a bribe: do not promise the teenager anything in advance for the fives in the test.

The most important thing

Don't make exams a family tragedy. The less nervous and controlled you are, the easier it is for a teenager to prepare for the session.

Stock up on fruit and encourage joint dinners, after which it is better to send the student to bed early. Before the exam, you should definitely get some sleep.
