Modern contraception is an alternative to abortion

03.11.2022

Abortion (from the Latin abortus – "miscarriage") is an artificial termination of pregnancy. According to modern medical standards, abortion is carried out, as a rule, at a period of up to 20 weeks of pregnancy or, if the gestation period is unknown, at a fetal weight of up to 400 g. Up to 12 weeks, an abortion can be performed at the request of a woman.

In total, about 4 million abortions are performed in the world every year, but many doctors say that the official statistics on the number of abortions should be doubled.

According to WHO, in developed countries, the probability of death due to abortion is 1 per 100,000 interventions. Every year in the world, out of 500 thousand women of childbearing age who die from pregnancy-related causes, 15% of cases are deaths as a result of abortion complications.

Abortion is extremely dangerous for a woman's health, since more than half of women risk never having children after an abortion, in addition, every third woman after an abortion receives complications that threaten her health, and the rate of complications after abortion is 2.5 times higher in pre-pregnant women.

Medical abortion is also not an option. It does not in all cases lead to the desired results, namely, to the complete removal of the fetal egg, and it may be necessary to perform a conventional instrumental abortion. The frequency of bleeding after a medical abortion is higher than after a surgical one, and the overall frequency of complications is the same.

Nowadays, there are many different methods of contraception. Highly effective methods include hormonal contraception (contraceptive pills, patch, vaginal ring), intrauterine devices and voluntary sterilization. Low–efficiency methods include the calendar method, barrier contraceptives (condoms), spermicides, interrupted sexual intercourse.

Each method of contraception has indications, contraindications, the possibility of use in certain age and social groups of women.

For example, voluntary surgical sterilization is an irreversible method of contraception. It can be used in women who have fully realized their reproductive plans, i.e. no longer planning to give birth. Intrauterine contraception is used in women who are married and have a permanent partner, because it can provoke inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs, therefore this method of contraception is not suitable for adolescents and young women who have not given birth.

When taking hormonal contraceptives, in addition to their direct action, with the right selection, you can get additional therapeutic bonuses: cosmetic effect, regulation of the menstrual cycle, reduction of soreness and profusion of menstruation – this is the so–called smart contraception. As well as the use of hormonal contraceptives is the prevention of the development of certain pathologies of the female genital organs. For example, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, oncological diseases.

Currently, hormonal contraceptives have been developed that contain folic acid in their composition, the intake of which 4-6 months before pregnancy planning prevents congenital malformations of the fetus and is a prevention of non-gestation.

For young girls, active users of gadgets, it is possible to use a hormonal contraceptive in a flex cartridge, which itself will "remind" when to take a pill, or "advise" what to do if a pill is missed, as well as tell you how to delay menstruation, i.e. will give you the opportunity to plan menstruation yourself depending on life plans (travel, sports competitions, etc.).

Modern medicine can offer suitable contraception for every woman. The most reliable source of information about contraception is an obstetrician–gynecologist. Everyone's health is different, and only an experienced specialist can choose the method that suits you.

Be modern, and abortions will become yesterday!
