The danger of self-medication with antibacterial drugs.

02.11.2022

The Health Department of the Lipetsk region once again warns about the danger of self-medication with antibacterial drugs (ABP).

In the region over the past 3 years, 2 fatal cases have been identified that occurred during self-treatment with antibiotics at home without a doctor's appointment. This group of medicines ranks first in the frequency of allergic reactions, including such serious ones as generalized urticaria, Quincke's edema and anaphylactic shock. The likelihood of developing allergic reactions increases with parenteral use.

It is impossible to exclude the development of allergic reactions when using antibacterial drugs, because this is due to the characteristics of the body of each individual patient. However, when prescribing antibiotic therapy, doctors can assess the risk of their occurrence and minimize the likelihood of developing other serious side effects of this group of drugs, and if necessary, medical workers will provide emergency care.

In addition, the cause of seasonal colds is most often viruses: influenza, SARS, and today COVID-19. Antibacterial drugs are not active against viruses. Thoughtless, uncontrolled intake of antibacterial drugs can contribute not only to the development of serious side effects, but also to form resistance to antibacterial drugs, which will lead to the impossibility of further treatment of serious inflammatory diseases! According to WHO, 700 thousand people die every year in the world from infections caused by resistant microbes. There are model studies done before the pandemic — by 2050, superbugs will kill up to 10 million people a year. It is likely that due to covid and the active use of antibiotics, the rate of bacterial transformation will increase several times.

Only a DOCTOR prescribes antibacterial drugs! Only he knows the clear indications for the appointment of antibacterial therapy and can determine whether there is a need for their appointment in each specific case.

In conclusion, we remind you:

  1. Indications for the appointment of antibacterial drugs are determined only by a doctor! You can't use them without a doctor's appointment!
  2. Antibacterial drugs can be dispensed in pharmacies only BY PRESCRIPTION!!!
  3. Parenteral administration of ABP should be carried out only in the conditions of medical institutions.
  4. Antibacterial drugs should be used in accordance with the instructions for the medical use of medicines.
