Why is iodine so important in human nutrition?
14.04.2021
According to the statistics of the World Health Organization, from 10 to 30% of the adult population in the world suffer from various diseases of the thyroid gland associated with both dysfunction of the gland and changes in its structure.
Iodine deficiency is a global health problem. The Russian Federation belongs to the region of moderate iodine deficiency, therefore, iodine-deficient thyroid pathology is not uncommon in our country.
Every day, the body of an adult needs 100-200 mcg of iodine, although in fact Russians receive iodine 2-3 times less than the norm! The main reason for this is insufficient intake of iodine with food.
To avoid iodine deficiency, it is necessary to replenish its reserves in the body:
Eat iodized salt instead of regular salt. For 1 gram of fresh iodized salt, there are 40 mcg of iodine.
Eat more fish and seafood. For example, 100 haddock contains 245 mcg of iodine.
A real storehouse of iodine is seaweed, 100 grams of the product contains 500 mcg of iodine and active substances that allow the body to assimilate iodine.
Iodine supplements and medications should only be used as directed by a physician. As a rule, iodine-containing preparations must be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Be sure to consult an endocrinologist and undergo a thyroid examination if you begin to notice symptoms such as:
unmotivated weight gain or sudden weight loss
hair loss, dry skin,
change in the configuration of the anterior surface of the neck.
Also, an endocrinologist's consultation is necessary for all women when planning a pregnancy.
