On September 17, 2021, the "World Patient Safety Day" is celebrated, established on May 25, 2019 by the World Health Organization.

22.09.2021

The goal of the World Patient Safety Day is to raise global awareness of patient safety and encourage international solidarity in actions aimed at improving patient safety and reducing harm to patients around the world, both the professional community and the patients themselves, their relatives, and various organizations representing the interests of patients.

In 2021, the theme "Safety in providing care to mothers and Newborns" was chosen for the World Patient Safety Day due to the high burden of risk and harm to which women and newborns are exposed due to unsafe delivery of care during childbirth. This problem has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to interruptions in the provision of basic medical care due to the interruption of supply chains, the lack of women's ability to receive the necessary medical care and the lack of qualified health professionals.

The goals of the World Patient Safety Day in 2021 are to raise global awareness of the problem of maternal and newborn safety, especially during childbirth; to ensure the participation of a wide range of stakeholders and adopt effective and innovative strategies aimed at improving the safety of mothers and newborns; to advocate for the introduction of best practices to reduce avoidable risks and prevent harm in the provision of medical care to all women and newborns during childbirth; to call on all stakeholders to take urgent and systematic actions to ensure the safe provision of medical care to mothers and newborns, especially during childbirth.

It is important to note that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, about 810 women and 6,700 newborns died every day, and the causes of this mortality most often occurred in the perinatal period (WHO data). In addition, about 2 million cases of stillbirths are registered every year, and more than 40% are during childbirth. In most cases, these deaths and stillbirths can be avoided by ensuring the provision of safe and high-quality care by qualified medical workers, for whom, in turn, favorable working conditions are created.

The following slogan was chosen for the information campaign: "It's time to take urgent measures to ensure safe and decent childbirth!" This slogan calls on all interested parties to accelerate activities to ensure safe and decent childbirth.
