Donation knows no boundaries
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14 in different countries of the world. It was first held in 2004, and was officially established in May 2005 during the 58th World Health Assembly in Geneva. The initiators of the World Donor Day were four international organizations calling for voluntary and free blood donation — WHO, The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations, and the International Blood Transfusion Society.
The date of the World Blood Donor Day is timed to coincide with the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian doctor, immunologist, who received in 1930 The Nobel Prize for the discovery of human blood groups. This day is designed to unite the world in an effort to pay tribute to the selfless people who give their blood to save the lives and improve the health of complete strangers. The event also aims to support blood transfusion services, blood donor organizations and other non-governmental organizations in strengthening and expanding their voluntary blood donation programs and strengthening national and local campaigns.
In 2021, this holiday will be held under the slogan "Donate blood, let life pulse in the world". Of particular importance is the activity of young people to support the donor movement.
Transfusions of blood and its components can save millions of lives every year, help prolong the lives of patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, are necessary for complex medical and surgical procedures, and play an important role in connection with disasters and natural disasters.
In order to maintain an irreducible strategic reserve of highly effective and safe blood components and the subsequent uninterrupted provision of medical institutions in the territory of the Russian Federation with the State Program for the Development of the Blood Service, the Youth Movement of the All-Russian Popular Front "Molodezhka ONF" with the support of the Office of the President of the Russian Federation for Public Projects, a donor marathon is being held for the second year in a row#Staya donor . According to the results of last year's marathon, more than 100 thousand Russians joined the donor movement.
