Prevention of malignant tumors

02.03.2023

In the modern world, malignant neoplasm is a serious and dangerous disease, which is a medical and social problem.  Mortality and morbidity rates are increasing annually worldwide, which is associated with lifestyle changes, environmental degradation and an increase in the influence of external and internal adverse factors.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to completely protect yourself and your loved ones from this disease, but there is an effective cancer prevention that allows you to minimize the risk of the disease.  Quite a lot of research and observations have been accumulated about which factors contribute to the development of cancer, and which, on the contrary, significantly reduce the chances of a malignant tumor.

The following most important protection factors can be distinguished:

  1. Proper nutrition. Eat enough fruits and vegetables. The basis of your diet should be plant-based food. Consume at least 400 grams of vegetables and fruits per day, in addition, use whole grains and beans.      Limit fatty foods. Try to eat leaner food, limit fats, especially of animal origin.   If you drink alcohol, consume it in moderation. The risk of a number of malignant neoplasms, including breast, colon, lung, kidney and liver cancers, is directly related to the amount of alcohol consumed.
  2. Tobacco smoking is the most important factor in the development of cancer. Smoking is associated with the development of various types of cancer: lung, stomach, larynx, oral cavity, bladder, kidney and cervix.
  3. Motor activity. Being overweight increases the risk of developing breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney cancers. Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight and increases life expectancy, improves quality of life and reduces the risk of cancer. Engage in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day.
  4. Emotional mood. Stress, psychological trauma, negative thoughts, depression, thoughts about illness – all this reduces the body's defenses and leads to the development of many diseases, including cancer.
  5. Sufficient amount of fluid in the body. By drinking about 2 liters of water a day, you will be able to protect yourself from many diseases (including cancer), as well as cure some existing chronic diseases, which will also help to get out of the cancer risk group.
  6. Protect yourself from the sun.  The most common type of cancer - skin cancer and melanoma of the skin are directly related to solar irradiation. Avoid the midday sun, stay in the shade, protect your skin with clothing, use sunscreen, avoid tanning beds and quartz lamps
  7. Get vaccinated. Some cancers are caused by viral infections. Hepatitis B increases the risk of liver cancer. Vaccination against hepatitis B protects against this infection and the risk of liver cancer. Cervical cancer and tumors of the oral cavity and pharynx are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccination against HPV before sexual activity can significantly reduce the risk of cervical cancer.
  8. Behave responsibly. Avoid irresponsible actions. Practice safe sexual behavior. Take seriously the screening of malignant neoplasms (periodic mammography, cytological examination of the cervix, colonoscopy), conducting preventive medical examinations.

There are high-risk groups for whom cancer prevention is most important. These groups include people suffering from chronic diseases: lungs, stomach, intestines, female genital organs, skin, subcutaneous tissue, some forms of anemia, obesity II-III art., goiter, alcohol addicts and smokers, persons whose blood relatives are sick or have had cancer. The risk group includes people with hypertension, obesity, diabetes.

A malignant tumor detected in the early stages is a curable disease, in the later stages it is a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment. It is vital to identify a malignant tumor in a timely manner. That is why it is so necessary to involve the patients themselves, who can note the first signs of deterioration of well-being and sound the alarm in time.

Consult a doctor if you have:

  • persistent hoarseness or shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing;
  • chest pain, loss of appetite;
  • prolonged increase in body temperature;
  • significant weight loss (for an unobvious reason);
  • painless, enlarged lymph nodes;
  • a noticeable, non-passing change in the rhythm of defecation for an unobvious reason.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to 100% protect yourself from cancer, but it is very important to do everything in our power to minimize the risk of this terrible disease. By adhering to a healthy lifestyle, you can prevent the occurrence of many oncological diseases. Physical activity and sports, proper work and rest regime, reasonable nutrition – these are all the components of a healthy lifestyle.  There is a reliable association with a significant reduction in the risk of developing cancer in those who follow these rules.
