The intranasal method of administration of the COVID-19 vaccine
Vaccination is an effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from coronavirus. For those who find it easier and more comfortable to receive the vaccine in the form of a nasal spray, an intranasal method of administering the vaccine "Gum-COVID-Vac" ("Sputnik V") is available.
This vaccine, as well as Sputnik V, consists of two components based on adenovirus vectors of the 26th and 5th types and is injected with a special spray nozzle into the nasal cavity at intervals of three weeks, that is, in the "prime-boost" mode ("prime-boost" mode – this is when the first component triggers the immune response (prime), and the second one accelerates and strengthens (boost). The drug forms immunity on the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract (mucosal immunity).
Patients have increased titers of IgA antibodies in the blood and nasal mucus and IgG antibodies that neutralize the virus in the blood. The drug also triggers a cellular immune response to the coronavirus.
The head of the Gamalea Center, Alexander Ginzburg, comments that at the moment this form of the drug will be used only for revaccination of adults who have already been vaccinated with an injectable "Satellite".
With the intranasal method, the Gum-COVID-Vac vaccine is injected into one nostril on inspiration using a syringe nozzle. Before vaccination, it is necessary to free the nasal passage of one of the nostrils into which the vaccine will be injected.Nasal vaccine protects against all strains of coronavirus. From the point of view of effectiveness, it is not the vaccination technology that is important, but the initial state of the patient's health, which the doctor must first check.
As in the case of injections, people without symptoms of respiratory infection and without medical contraindications to vaccination should receive the nasal vaccine from COVID-19.
