What is the flu?

02.03.2023

Influenza is an acute viral infection of the respiratory tract, characterized by damage to the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract, fever, intoxication, as well as disruption of the cardiovascular and nervous systems.

Influenza is one of the most severe and widespread viral diseases of the winter season.

Children are particularly vulnerable to the flu. The reason is an insufficiently formed immunity. Children are more likely to get complications of infection. Flu in children can have a severe course. Influenza virus causes infection - 3 serological types – A, B and C.

The spread of the virus in organized collectives is happening rapidly.

The flu virus is often transmitted from child to child by sneezing or coughing.

There is a possibility of contact transmission of the virus through household items, children's toys, dishes, underwear. The virus is able to survive for 2 hours on countertops, tables, door handles, as well as pens and pencils. Children often touch surfaces and then the mouth, nose or eyes.

A person with the flu is most contagious 24 hours before the onset of symptoms and in the first days of the disease.

A child is more likely to become infected if:

  • he is among people infected with the flu;
  • there was no vaccination against influenza;
  • neglects the rules of personal hygiene, in particular hand washing.

What are the symptoms of flu in children?

Flu symptoms in children do not differ from the symptoms of the disease in adults, but young children are especially susceptible to the early lightning-fast development of complications of infection. Most often they are diagnosed with pneumonia, which can develop in the first days of the disease.

Acute onset: the disease begins acutely with fever, which can reach 40.5 ° C. Also among the symptoms:

  • body aches;
  • headache;
  • sore throat;
  • severe intoxication syndrome (lethargy, weakness, malaise, etc.);
  • nasal congestion, dry mucous membranes, minor rhinitis, dry cough, redness of the eyes, pain in the eyes.

In some cases, the child may have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

During the flu, an exacerbation of concomitant diseases is possible.

Among the complications of influenza, pneumonia is most common, often leading to a fatal outcome.

Treatment of influenza in children is carried out under the supervision of a pediatrician, hospitalization may be required.

Hospitalization is mandatory in case of severe flu, moderate course with the development of complications, as well as if the patient is a newborn.

In what case is it necessary to call an ambulance?

  • increasing shortness of breath;
  • cyanosis of the skin;
  • confusion or agitation, convulsions;
  • repeated vomiting;
  • reduction of urination;
  • maintaining or increasing fever numbers for more than 5 days.

How to protect a child from getting the flu?

The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot every year. Vaccination against influenza is carried out in the pre–epidemic period - before the incidence rate rises.

In organized collectives – kindergartens and schools, during the period of the rise in morbidity, a morning filter is carried out, a doctor or a nurse examines children in order to identify those who are ill.

Flu prevention measures in the midst of an epidemic:

  • after each trip on public transport, upon arrival home, it is necessary to wash your hands thoroughly. If it is not possible to wash your hands, it is recommended to have antibacterial wet wipes or antibacterial gel with you;
  • do not touch the face, mucous membranes of the mouth, nose with dirty hands;
  • avoid crowded places;
  • if the child is ill, use a medical mask while caring for him;
  • if your child is sick, leave him at home. This will not only reduce the risk of infection spreading, but also reduce the likelihood of complications, including life-threatening ones.
