The chief freelance endocrinologist of the Lipetsk region RCD N. P. Gorbunova told which of the patients with diseases of the endocrine system needs to be vaccinated against COVID-19

01.07.2021

COVID-19-a potentially severe acute respiratory infection is a dangerous disease even for people who consider themselves healthy, not to mention those who have chronic diseases. The presence of chronic diseases is not a restriction to vaccination – on the contrary, they can be considered a priority indication for it.

Vaccination against this virus is absolutely necessary, especially for our patients with diabetes, older people, and obese people. The last year and a half have shown that patients with diseases of the endocrine system are at risk, they have an increased risk of hospitalization, complications and adverse outcomes due to coronavirus infection.

The scientific community has decided on the expediency of vaccination against COVID-19 in patients with type 1, type 2 diabetes mellitus, etc., endocrine pathology in compliance with contraindications and rules of caution. This will reduce the risk of progression of complications and mortality.

Diabetes mellitus is the second most common concomitant pathology in COVID-19, in which the probability of adverse outcomes increases by 2-3 times. At the same time, the combination of diabetes, obesity and arterial hypertension increases the risk of death by almost 5 times.

If the patient is not in a state of decompensation for diabetes, he has no obvious contraindications, such as hypersensitivity or exacerbation of chronic diseases, allergic reactions in the anamnesis, if there is no pregnancy or breast-feeding period, it is necessary to get vaccinated.

Patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis after kidney transplantation are a priority group for vaccination. It is noted that the mortality rate among our patients is much higher than among other patients. So it is necessary to be vaccinated.

No special examinations are required before vaccination. Vaccination is not carried out in patients who have data on a confirmed COVID-19 disease, or on the presence of class M and/or G antibodies. But we know that the immunity after the covid disease is unstable, in the next months it will weaken, and the question of vaccination will still be raised.

Vaccination against COVID-19 is designed to form acquired immunity and resistance to the virus by training the body's immune system.

Russian scientists have developed an effective and safe vaccine, which is especially important for people at risk who have chronic diseases, including endocrine disorders.
