How to avoid the development of skin cancer?

11.06.2021

Skin cancer is one of the most common oncological diseases. It is on the 4th place in the frequency of diagnosis in men (after lung, stomach and prostate cancer) and on the 2nd place - in women (after breast cancer).

Like any other disease, skin cancer is better prevented than treated. Therefore, you should follow the rules of prevention, especially for those who are at risk.

Risk factors for skin cancer.

At risk are people of the Caucasian race, especially the "Celtic" phenotype – light or red hair, pale skin. In Africans and Asians, the disease is 6-10 times less common.

A large number of moles on the body increases the risk of developing melanoma. UV rays significantly increase the risk of this type of skin cancer. Accordingly, the disease is more often diagnosed in those who live in the southern regions, spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer in sunny weather, and often visit a solarium.

Increases the risk of skin cancer and a genetic predisposition – a history of skin cancer in one of the direct relatives.

Chemical carcinogens – products of oil refining, shale, coal, mineral oils, resins, insecticides, herbicides, arsenic-have a great impact on the skin.

Also, skin cancer is much more often detected in smokers. This is especially true for the squamous cell variety of the disease.

The effect of ultraviolet light on the skin.

Staying in the scorching sun for a long time is in any case harmful. You get a tan, and the skin gets a dangerous "dose" of ultraviolet radiation. The change in color already indicates that the skin is trying to adapt to harmful conditions. The appearance of an immediate tan suggests that the skin had to protect itself from sunburn and adapt to the effects of UV rays. During any session of sun exposure, irreversible changes can occur in the DNA of the cells responsible for the metabolism of melanin.

Tanning has become particularly dangerous in recent decades, as the ozone layer has thinned due to environmental degradation and has begun to pass more ultraviolet rays of a carcinogenic type.

How to prevent skin cancer.

  • avoid prolonged exposure to the street between 12 and 4 days;
  • apply sunscreen that matches your skin type;
  • do not use expired cosmetics and questionable folk remedies;
  • on vacation in hot countries, wear special beach clothes, wide-brimmed hats, and sunbathe under the awning;
  • consult a doctor in a timely manner and completely cure any skin diseases;
  • give up smoking and alcohol, lead a healthy lifestyle;
  • conduct a regular examination of your moles and do not delay going to the doctor.

Early diagnosis will help prevent further progression of the disease. If you remove the tumor at the first sign of malignant changes, you can avoid the development of skin cancer.
