What are the risks of drug poisoning?

31.03.2021

Fatal drug poisoning as a result of an overdose is possible not only in an addict, but also in a person taking a powerful drug for the first time, as well as in the case of erroneous medication and suicide attempts.

Symptoms of drug poisoning.

Various degrees of disorder of consciousness from a stopper to a coma, the phenomenon of acute respiratory failure. The victim is slow, sluggish and monosyllabic answers to questions, is poorly oriented in what is happening around, falls asleep. In a severe case, consciousness is completely absent.

Lowering blood pressure, reducing the pulse and breathing-this is how opium drugs work. When poisoning with psychotropic drugs before losing consciousness, there is excitement, sometimes aggression or euphoria. There is also tachycardia, heart failure, rapid breathing, dizziness. The appearance of trembling in the hands, swimming of the eyeballs is an unfavorable sign: there is a high probability of brain edema!

What is dangerous?

Drug poisoning leads to toxic damage to the kidneys, liver, heart, and brain. Opioid drugs depress the nervous system, and a person can die from respiratory and circulatory arrest. Other common causes of death in drug poisoning are: edema of the brain and lungs, intoxication as a result of positional compression syndrome (when in the absence of consciousness under the weight of the victim's body, blood circulation in the extremities is disrupted and necrosis develops), hemorrhages in internal organs, including the brain, injuries.

If the first signs of poisoning appear, you must immediately call an ambulance!

Before the ambulance arrives, lay the victim on his side, bring his lower arm forward. Release the chest and neck from the constricting clothing, provide fresh air. If the victim is conscious, it is necessary to wash the stomach before the ambulance arrives. For washing, use cool tap water.

In case of slowness, confusion, drowsiness, bring a cotton wool moistened with ammonia to your nose. In the absence of ammonia, rub the earlobes, tickle the nasal passages. Such actions stimulate the respiratory and vasomotor centers, prevent loss of consciousness.

Drug poisoning: what not to do?

Refuse to be admitted to a hospital, even if the person has become better after the actions of the ambulance team. The administered antidotes have a shorter duration than the drugs, so the improvement in the condition may soon be replaced by a coma.

Remember! To avoid accidental poisoning with drugs and other medicines, always keep medicines out of the reach of children. Do not use medicines with a hard-to-read, worn-out label and an expired expiration date!
