First aid for a hypertensive crisis.

29.03.2021

A hypertensive crisis is a condition that manifests itself as high blood pressure (BP) (systolic or "upper" blood pressure, usually more than 180 mm Hg; diastolic or "lower" blood pressure — more than 100 mm Hg).

Here are the main symptoms of a hypertensive crisis:

  • headache, more often in the occipital region, or heaviness and noise in the head;

  • flickering "flies", a veil or a grid in front of the eyes;

  • nausea, feelings of exhaustion, fatigue, internal tension;

  • shortness of breath, weakness, constant monotonous aching pain/discomfort in the heart area, sometimes the appearance or increase of pasty / puffiness of the skin of the face, hands, legs.

In case of symptoms of a hypertensive crisis, it is necessary to provide first aid to a person. Here is the algorithm of actions. Be sure to keep this list if you or your loved ones suffer from hypertension.

  1. It is necessary to remove the bright light, provide peace and fresh air (unbutton the shirt collar, ventilate the room, etc.).);

  2. Measure your blood pressure. If its "upper" level is higher than or equal to 160 mm Hg, you should take a hypotensive drug previously recommended by your doctor. In the absence of a doctor-recommended antihypertensive drug or when registering a blood pressure level above 200 mm Hg - urgently call an ambulance.

  3. Before the arrival of an ambulance, it is necessary, if possible, to sit the person in a chair with armrests and make him a hot foot bath (lower his legs in a container with hot water). Attention! A person with a hypertensive crisis is prohibited from any sudden movements (abruptly getting up, sitting down, lying down, bending down), pushing hard and any physical activity.

  4. After 40-60 minutes after taking the medicine recommended by the doctor, re-measure the pressure. If its level has not decreased by 20-30 mm Hg from the initial level and / or the condition has not improved, call an ambulance immediately. When talking with a doctor, it is important to clarify what drugs should be taken in the development of a hypertensive crisis, clearly write down their names, dosage and time sequence (algorithm)of their intake, and also ask the doctor for what manifestations of the disease it is necessary to urgently call an ambulance.

  5. It is important for everyone who suffers from hypertension to form an individual mini-first aid kit for a hypertensive crisis and always carry it with them, since a hypertensive crisis can develop at any time and in any place.
